PSX, RT, and simulator time

Post by Will »

Please help me think this through... any errors in the statements below?

In PSX, RealTraffic won't inject METARs unless native weather in PSX is turned OFF, by unchecking the box "Set zones by flight track and downloaded METARs". Assuming RealTraffic is set up to inject weather, that box in PSX controls where the METARs in PSX come from. Box checked, the METARs come from PSX. Box unchecked, the METARs come from RealTraffic. True?

However, the "Set zones by flight track..." box in PSX has no effect on whether RealTraffic is injecting winds aloft. This is entirely controlled by RealTraffic; if you click RealTraffic's "Inject advanced weather" box, then RealTraffic will inject winds aloft (via the wind corridor) regardless of the status of the "Set zones by flight track..." box in PSX. Also true?

This is important for the user to understand, because the time in PSX is synchronized with real world time when the box "Set zones by flight track..." box is checked, but not if the box is unchecked. A user could uncheck the box for RealTraffic's weather, unaware that the time in the sim is now "frozen" to the time on the situ, so if you save and reload the situ, the time in the PSX universe is the saved time, not the real-world time.

This isn't a bug or a problem, because you can always sync the time with a few extra clicks. You just have to be aware that it's happening.

Lastly, for people who want to fly with real-world weather in real-world time, you can make things simpler by keeping the "Set zones by flight track..." button checked and use PSX native METARs, while RealTraffic injects winds aloft. If you change your mind and want historical weather, uncheck the box or simply set the time of your choice (which automatically deselects the box).

Sorry if this is too long for something that may be completely obvious to some!

I think your first statement is correct. PSX ignores RT METARs when PSX native weather is turned on. However, you may want to test whether that option isn't automatically disabled by RT to allow its weather to be injected.

Your second statement is true. RT always injects winds/temps aloft as long as that option is selected in RT. RT also activates the embed corridor in planet weather option (not sure as to the exact wording), otherwise it wouldn't have any effect.

Remember there's also a "Simulator controls time offset" option in RT - that would remove one of the ambiguities and slave the RT time to the PSX internal time.

Lastly, remember that RT has access to a about 10% more METARs than PSX as the data is sourced from a variety of sources, not just aviationweather.gov.
